A Kotsubugaya tree that is estimated to be over 400 years old stands tall in front of the main hall of Kuzoji Temple, which stands alone in the middle of nature.
Although it is not a particularly large tree at 25m in height, it is a valuable species, and although the tip was lost due to a lightning strike, it is still thriving.
Kotsubugaya is a variety of Kaya tree, and the only known ones in Japan are Kozoji Temple and Kotsubugaya in Obara, Miyagi Prefecture.
It was designated as a national natural monument on June 8, 1993 (Heisei 5).
