It is said to be the site of a palace where Saio once lived, and related ruins have been excavated nearby.
saikuu, also called ``Itsukinomiya'', was the site of Saio's palace and saikuu government office called Saiku-ryo.

A Saio was chosen from among the women of the imperial family and dispatched from the capital to Ise to serve the Ise Grand IseJingu on behalf of the emperor. In 2011, Japan's oldest pottery with ``Iroha Uta'' written in hiragana was unearthed.
