<Isao Takahata (1935-2018)>

Isao Takahata was born in 1935 in what is now IseCity Mie Prefecture, and spent his childhood in TsuCity. Graduated from the Department of French Literature at the University of Tokyo in 1959, and joined what is now Toei Animation in the same year. In 1968, he completed his first full-length directorial work, ``The Sun Prince: The Adventures of Horus.'' In the 1970s, he directed ``Heidi, Girl in the Alps'' (1974) and ``Three Thousand Leagues in Search of Mother.'' He has directed all episodes of television masterpieces such as Anne of Green Gables (1976) and Anne of Green Gables (1979).

From the 1980s onwards, he wrote and directed films such as ``Jarinko Chie'' (1981), ``Grave of the Fireflies'' (1988), and ``Heisei Tanuki Gassen Pon Poko'' (1994). In addition to expressing the reality of ordinary people's lives, I created works that reconsider Japan's wartime and postwar history.

In his posthumous work, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2013), he made full use of digital technology to create a watercolor-style drawing method that made use of hand-drawn lines, achieving an expressive innovation that was on a completely different level from the traditional cel style. Did.

He also served as a producer for Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, which was released in 1984, and in 1985 he participated in the establishment of Studio Ghibli, playing an active role alongside Hayao Miyazaki as one of the two pillars of Studio Ghibli.

Highlights of “Isao Takahata Exhibition”

Here, we will explain in detail the highlights of the ``Isao Takahata Exhibition,'' including Isao Takahata's ``non-painting'' production and the works he has produced so far.

The exhibition will be a rare opportunity to display more than 1,300 exhibit materials, including storyboards, layouts, background paintings, original drawings, and composition draft notes, so please read this article and be sure to visit the site. ♪

Chapter 1 Starting point Passion for animated films

Takahata joined Toei Animation, now Toei Animation, in 1959, aiming to become an animation director.

In ``The Sun Prince: The Adventures of Horus'' (1968), which was his first feature-length theatrical release (directed), it becomes clear why this work was groundbreaking in the history of Japanese animation.

Regarding ``Prince of the Sun: The Adventures of Horus'', Takahata seems to have said, ``It's a very memorable work that you could say we poured everything from a period of our youth into.''

Chapter 2 Exploring new areas of expression for joy animation in daily life

Heidi, the girl in the Alps

This chapter examines the teamwork with Hayao Miyazaki and Yoshifumi Kondo through storyboards, layouts, background paintings, etc., and approaches the secrets of Takahata's direction.

After leaving Toei Animation, Takahata continued to write about food, clothing, shelter, nature, and other famous television series such as ``Heidi, Girl of the Alps'' (1974) and ``Anne of Green Gables'' (1979), which are still widely known today. By carefully depicting everyday life, such as the relationships between people, we have broken new ground by creating a vivid human drama that can be achieved in 52 episodes a year.

Chapter 3: Looking at Japanese Culture: Dialogue between past and present

Since the 1980s, Takahata has specialized in works set in Japan, vividly capturing the country's climate and the reality of ordinary people's lives.

Studio Ghibli, which was involved in the establishment of this project in 1985, has been working on contemporary Japanese films such as ``Grave of the Fireflies'' (1988), ``Omohideporoporo'' (1991), and ``Heisei Tanuki Gassen Ponpoko'' (1994). The results appear in a group of works that focus on history.

This chapter focuses on the creation of a way of retelling the Japanese wartime and postwar experiences as a continuation of the present day, and the development of the theme of "satoyama."

Chapter 4: The dynamism of sketching: A new challenge to animation

The final chapter unravels Takahata's alchemy of images, backed by his deep knowledge of art.

Takahata was also a tireless explorer of the expressive form of animation. In the 1990s, he became obsessed with the study of picture scrolls, digging into the traditions of Japanese visual culture and continuing to explore new expressive styles for animation that integrate characters and backgrounds.

The results were ``Hoho Kekyo: My Neighbor Yamada-kun'' (1999) and ``The Tale of the Princess Kaguya'' (2013).

Utilizing digital technology, we took on the challenge of creating a watercolor-style drawing method that makes use of hand-drawn lines, and achieved an expression that stands out from the traditional cel style.

What is cell style?

A method of drawing a moving object such as a person on a transparent sheet, overlaying it on another background image, and photographing it one frame at a time.
