Yamato tachibana is a small evergreen tree that grows in the mountains near the coast. It belongs to the genus Citrus in the family Rutaceae, and is thought to be endemic to Japan.
White flowers bloom from May to June, and from autumn to winter it produces golden yellow fruits, about 2.5 cm in diameter, resembling yuzu.
It has a refreshing aroma unique to citrus fruits, but the fruit has many seeds and is sour, making it unsuitable for consumption as is.However, in this region, various products such as scented bags and ice cream have been developed using Yamato tachibana.
Most of them are thought to have been planted as boundary trees rather than wild tachibana trees, but large ones are said to be rare even nationwide.
It was designated as a prefectural natural monument on April 7, 1955.
