A day trip for girls in MeiwaTown where you can enjoy the Japanese heritage “Praying Princess Saio Miyako saikuu”!

掲載日:2017.07.10

Saio was a princess who served at IseJingu in place of the Emperor. I traveled to MeiwaTown to experience the history and culture of Saio! Please take a look at our report on a women's trip where you can experience the elegant world of Heian Japan!

saikuu is also called ``Saiku'' and ``Itsukinomiya.'' It is said that it was the palace and government office of Saio, who served IseJingu on behalf of the emperor. After many rare pottery items were unearthed in the 1960s, large-scale excavations were conducted.
In 2015, the vast 137.1 hectares of land was designated as a "Japan Heritage" by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. There are facilities scattered throughout the town where you can learn about history.

The journey begins at saikuu Station. It's nice to take the express train to visit Ise all at once, but why not change things up a bit and take a leisurely one-day historical trip from saikuu Station?
It takes about 20 minutes from IseCity Station to get to the station building, which has beautiful wood grain and a nice atmosphere.

The first place you'll want to visit ItsukinomiyaHallforHistorical. The building is modeled after the Shinden-zukuri style of aristocratic mansions from the Heian period, and was constructed using a construction method that does not use nails.
Let's experience the life of the aristocracy back then!

The scent of wood permeates the spacious space with high ceilings. Not only can you increase your knowledge, but there are many colorful and interesting exhibits. The beautiful materials and interior will satisfy museum buffs, art lovers, and architecture buffs alike. It's beautiful anyway.

At a reasonable price, you can experience wearing a Juni-hitoe kimono.
If you hold a fan and strike a pose, you'll feel like a princess! Depending on how you look at it, is it a doll? Don't forget to take pictures with your smartphone or digital camera.
Yes, cheese! My back becomes straighter and my posture changes somehow.

As you go deeper into the building, you will find a room where you can try your hand at weaving. Can you weave well?
When I concentrate, I tend to become silent. If you think about it, the clothes we take for granted and the cloth bags we carry are all made of thread and fibers. In the past, people made things by hand, taking time and care.

You can make colorful and cute coasters using plant-dyed hemp thread!
You can also make placemats. However, the colors are bright! I guess the female spirit of admiring beautiful and cute things has not changed, both now and in the past.

When you step out of the experience center, you will see a row of small buildings standing across a bright yellow-green rice field.
This small town is a 1/10 scale miniature replica of what it looked like back then. The true size is 10 times the width of the path that people can pass through.
Let's look at saikuu of the Heian period like a giant! The colored buildings are those that were actually excavated, and the white buildings are recreated from imagination. There are tadpoles and other aquatic creatures on the waterside next to the footpath, giving you a sense of the richness of nature.

If you get tired of walking, take a break at Itsuki Chaya.
In addition to being a free rest area, there is also a corner where you can buy souvenirs. In the dining space, you can enjoy delicious meals made with local products.
If you take the time to visit this town, be sure to enjoy lunch here!

Our recommendation is definitely Saio's Treasure Box (reservation required).
It is a reproduction of the menu from back then, using plenty of local ingredients, and is a feast that is both delicious for the palate and pleasing to the eye! The menu is like a course.
Meat, vegetables, rice dishes, and desserts such as fruits will fill you up. There are many healthy ingredients, so you can eat a lot without worrying.

"Let's eat!"

Ancient rice rice has a chewy texture! This rice is grown in the rice field in front of Itsuki Chaya.
It is unclear whether this delicious ancient rice was more expensive for people at the time, or whether white rice was considered more valuable.
Whatever it is, you'll love the chewy texture.

It's not hanpen... This is called ``shark sauce'' and is dried shark fish.
It's amazing how a feared sea creature can turn into such a delicious dish. It's softer than it looks, and the taste is relatively simple and salty. It goes well with rice and is perfect as a snack.
By the way, this shark sauce is also commonly sold at supermarkets. It's a specialty of this region. rare!

Saiku Heian no Mori consists of three buildings: Seiden, Nishiwakiden, and Higashiwakiden, which were reconstructed in the same location as they were excavated.
In the back, there is ``Bamboo Shrine'' with lush greenery.
Over a period of about 660 years, each time the emperor changed hands, around 60 Saio were dispatched from the capital to serve at IseJingu. It is believed that the place where they lived was within the precincts of Take Shrine.

At Saiku-no-Mori, you can experience VR (virtual reality) using a tablet.
The touch panel is a useful tool for learning about history!
Supports 5 languages. It may be a nice feature not only for people who come from overseas to enjoy sightseeing, but also for people who are learning foreign languages. Why not try listening to it in the language you are studying?

If you hold it up to the three buildings, it will look like this. It reminds me of what life was like back then.
A scene from the annual prayer festival to pray for a rich harvest. You can see a huge number of priests participating in the festival!

The wind blowing through the forest is cool and pleasant. What were the princesses sent from the capital thinking about living in this land?

Two bows, two claps, one bow. What kind of request should I make?

The place you'll want to visit at the end of your trip is the Itsukinomiya Regional Exchange Center.
It is a very new building, and in addition to an observation deck that overlooks Saiku Heian no Mori, Take Shrine, and the entire MeiwaTown area, there is also a souvenir corner and a rest area decorated with festival floats.

The air conditioning is working, making it comfortable even on hot days.
Furthermore, why not try cooling down your body after a long workout with Daiginjo Ice Cream?
These days, unusual ice creams are no longer rare. But if you think this dessert sounds familiar, you're wrong! It tastes like alcohol.
Since it contains alcohol, when visiting MeiwaTown, we recommend taking the train to saikuu Station, which is full of the atmosphere at the beginning.

It is said to be the site of a palace where Saio once lived, and related ruins have been excavated nearby. saikuu is also called ``Itsukinomiya,'' and it was the site of Saio's palace and saikuu government office called Saiku-ryo. Saio was selected from among the women of the imperial IseJingu and dispatched from the capital to Ise to serve Ise Grand Shrine on behalf of the emperor. In 2011, Japan's oldest pottery with ``Iroha Uta'' written in hiragana was unearthed.

This shrine was established in 1911 by combining the deities of 25 shrines located in the former saikuu Village. It was originally located in Takekawa's hometown, but during the Meiji period it was moved to its current location, where Nonomiya Shrine was enshrined. Ruins of large-scale walls and buildings with dug-out pillars from the Heian period have been excavated in the surrounding area, and it is said that this may have been the site of Saio's palace. It is also noteworthy that the votive tablets that used to be in the ema hall, which are named after the Kanze-ryu noh song ``Ema,'' are now kept at this shrine. The office is only open on Saturdays and Sundays. We only distribute Goshuin stamps and small amulets from Take Shrine on Saturdays and Sundays, so please stop by when you are visiting Ise. On the day of the full moon visit, the shrine office will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and limited full moon stamps will be distributed. You can experience the Heian period, when saikuu was at its most prosperous. The building is modeled after the ``Shinden-zukuri'' style of aristocratic residences from the Heian period, and takes advantage of the architectural techniques of the time and does not use nails in assembling the parts. Inside the museum, in addition to holding hands-on classes where you can learn about the annual events, techniques, and culture of the time, you can also try on Juni-hitoe and Naogi. You can also try out ancient games such as board sugoroku and shellfish.
