What is Dandanden in Fukano?

Fukano Dandan Rice Fields are rice terraces located in the Fukano district of Iinan-cho MatsusakaCity. Approximately 120 stone rice terraces have been built on the slope of the mountain, and it is said to have been cultivated from the mid-Muromachi period to the early Edo period.

History and highlights

Dandandada in Fukano is located at the foot of Mt. Shiraisan, one of the three Ise mountains.

In this area, which was an important base for the Kitabatake clan during the Muromachi period, there is a ``Noroshiba'' to the west of Mt. Shiranui, and it is said that terraced rice fields were cultivated to ensure food for the samurai who stood guard. Masu.

History of Fukano district

Originally, the Fukano area was not blessed with arable land, and the production of Japanese paper and other products had been popular since ancient times. You can feel the great skill and effort of our predecessors who built approximately 120 stone rice terraces on this land. Since the Meiji period, cattle fattening has become popular, and the area is known as the ``birthplace of Matsusaka beef.''

Certified as one of Japan's Top 100 Rice Terraces

In July 1999, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries recognized 134 rice terraces across Japan as one of Japan's Top 100 Rice Terraces, and Fukano's Dandan Rice was selected as one of them.

Fugamaru`` MaruyamaSenmaida'' in KumanoCity and ``Sakamoto Rice Terraces'' in KameyamaCity have also been certified as ``Japan's Top 100 Rice Terraces.'' We are proud that there are three famous rice terraces in the prefecture that have been selected as one of the top 100 rice terraces.

What is Japan's Top 100 Rice Terraces?

In July 1997, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries selected ``Japan's Top 100 Rice Terraces'' with the aim of promoting conservation and maintenance activities for rice terraces in rural areas, which have beautiful landscapes, traditions, and culture.

Parking location

Dandan-ta in Fukano has a parking lot for tourists, which can accommodate about 10 cars.

The public restrooms include multi-purpose restrooms that are easy for people in wheelchairs to use, and the parking lot has space for wheelchairs, so we have taken great care to ensure barrier-free access.

Fukano's Dandanda can be accessed from along National Route 166, and the spot name ``Fukano's Dandanda Parking Lot'' is registered on Google Maps.

The road to the parking lot is uphill and the road is narrow in some places, so be careful of oncoming cars and pedestrians.

When setting up your Fugamarucar's navigation system, it's a good idea to set Hosenji, a temple near the parking lot, as your destination.

Points to note when admiring rice terraces
① Rice terraces are managed by farmers. Please refrain from entering rice fields or trampling on banks.
② There are some parts of the rice terraces where barbed wire has been erected to prevent damage from animals. It is dangerous to approach barbed wire, so be careful.
③ Villages spread around the rice terraces. Enjoy your sightseeing without forgetting to be considerate to local residents.

① Overlooking the Fukano area

You can access the entrance of the terraced rice fields in just a few minutes on foot from the parking lot, and you can see a panoramic view of the Fukano area from near the entrance.

If you walk a little from location ①, you will see a landscape of stone rice terraces. This may be the viewing point where you can feel the name "Dandanda" the most.

③ Villages and rice terraces

A village spreads out near the Dandan rice fields in Fukano, and this is a point where you can admire the scenery from right next to the rice terraces.

④ Rice terrace reflection

A reflection (water mirror) is a sight that can be seen immediately after the rice terraces are filled with water. The blue sky and clouds reflected in the rice terraces are magical.

Fukano Rice Terrace Festival

At the Dandan rice fields in Fukano, the "Fukano Rice Terrace Festival" is held in late October after the rice harvest is finished.

Bamboo lanterns set up throughout the rice terraces are lit up, creating a fantastical atmosphere that you can enjoy.

When I participated in Fugamaru, there were food stalls selling yakisoba and hamayaki, and there was also a singing show and a mochi-pounding competition, making it a festival-filled event.

Cham2020-2021 has been canceled to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus. I can't wait to see the sight of about 4,000 bamboo lanterns lit up again.

① Couple Falls

A 6-minute drive from Dandanda in Fukano is the Meoto Falls where you can see a beautiful waterfall.

This waterfall is located within the precincts of a temple called Oishi Fudo-in, and is called the couple's waterfall because it has two large streams.

Michi-no-eki Chakura station

Michi-no-eki Station is located about 10 minutes by car from Dandanda in Fukano.

The clear stream of the Kushida River flows along National Route 166, and a valley called kahadavalley spreads out. You can also see kahadavalley from the road from Michi-no-eki in Fukano to Chakura Station.

The Kushida River that flows through Chamu Kahadakahadavalley is highly transparent and has a beautiful emerald green color. The greenery of the mountains is beautiful from April to October.

About 25 minutes by car from Dandanda in Fukano is Mezurashi-togePass a legendary mountain pass related to Amaterasu Omikami.

It is said that it came to be called ``Mezurashi Pass'' because Amaterasu Omikami and Amenokoyane no Mikoto met and said ``Oh, Mezurashiya''. Masu.
