Introducing the charms of saikuu which is connected to IseJingu! I went on a trip to enjoy MeiwaTown ♪

掲載日:2018.10.11

saikuu is connected to IseJingu. Although it appears in the Tale of Genji and has a history of about 660 years, not much is known about its actual situation. MeiwaTown in Mie Prefecture is an attractive town where you can experience saikuu throughout the town. It has hands-on facilities and a museum, and has been certified as a designated historic site by the country. We will introduce you to the charms of Geku in MeiwaTown, which you should visit together with Ise's saikuu and Naiku.

Have you ever heard the words "Saio" and "saikuu"?

Saio is an unmarried princess who was chosen in ancient times to serve the god of IseJingu instead of the emperor.
Accompanied by approximately 500 attendants, he traveled from the capital of Kyoto to the government office in Ise, where he lived until the Emperor took over. In fact, it also appears in Murasaki Shikibu's ``The Tale of Genji.''

saikuu, also called ``Itsukinomiya,'' refers to the government office where Saio lived.

It is said that the Saio system lasted for about 660 years, and the place where saikuu was located is MeiwaTown in Mie Prefecture.

This time, I would like to introduce in detail saikuu which is inseparable from IseJingu!

When you get off at Kintetsu saikuu Station, the entire town is the ruins of saikuu.

Since it was designated as a designated historic site by the country in 1979, no large buildings have been built there. The whole town is trying to protect the ruins and pass them on to future generations!

As you walk a short distance from the station, this building that catches your eye is the ` ItsukinomiyaHallforHistorical.''
Here you can experience life at the time, such as trying on Juni Hitoe and playing Kemari!

This is Saiku Heian no Mori, a plaza that recreates a building where various rituals were held at the time. It's amazing to think that hundreds of officials were holding ceremonies and banquets here!

When talking about saikuu, you cannot miss the SaikuHistoricalMuseum!
This museum is the best place to experience saikuu in the city, and the admission fee is 340 yen for adults, 220 yen for university students, and free for high school students and under, making it a great value!

Let's go inside!

The entrance is spacious and looks so beautiful that it's hard to believe that it was opened in 1989. There is also a coloring corner and a baby toilet, so you can have fun with your kids!

Guidebooks are available in English, Chinese, and Korean. You can also tour with a multilingual audio guide or guided tour by a curator!

In fact, the ruins of saikuu are buried beneath this museum. Therefore, it was built without driving any piles. What a surprise!

At the movie theater, two types of videos are shown every 90 minutes, with the themes of ``What is Saio?'' and ``Excavation of saikuu Ruins,'' and you can watch them freely.

Around it, pottery excavated from saikuu ruins is displayed in chronological order, allowing you to enjoy the changes that have taken place.

Exhibition Room I displays items that give an impression of what saikuu was like at that time. It seems that all of the exhibits here have been restored using only the text in documents and other sources as clues!

It shows the route from Kyoto to Ise, both ways.
It is said that some of the Saiōs took up the post after being separated from their romantic relationships, and my heart aches when I think of their state of mind during the journey. . .

In fact, recipes for the meals that Saio ate have not been found.
Therefore, we have imagined and recreated the situation at that time based on the taxes (foodstuffs) that were paid at that time.

Exhibition Room II is an exhibition related to excavation research. Let's take a look!

A model that recreates saikuu at that time is displayed overlapping an aerial photograph of the current town. If you actually walk around the town after seeing this, you'll be able to enjoy this town even more!

A model of the excavation site is on display. It seems that the thickness and depth of the pillar can be determined from the difference in the color of the soil! If I have a chance, I would like to experience excavation work as well!

You can experience reconstructing broken pottery like a puzzle.
Compete with your friends like a game! It's surprisingly annoying. . .

After you've finished your tour, you can take a break at the cafe inside!

The museum also has an antenna shop that sells Mie specialty products. If you choose a souvenir unique to saikuu, it will definitely become a hot topic!

Three buildings from the Heian period, `` saikuu Doryo Hall,'' have been restored at the site of the historic saikuu. It conveys the charm of ancient architecture and recreates the appearance of an ancient saikuu. There are three buildings that are believed to have been used for ceremonies and banquets under the control of saikuu dormitory, saikuu government office. In the background is the world of ancient architecture from the Heian period.

You can experience the Heian period, when saikuu was at its most prosperous. The building is modeled after the ``Shinden-zukuri'' style of aristocratic residences from the Heian period, and takes advantage of the architectural techniques of the time and does not use nails in assembling the parts. Inside the museum, in addition to holding hands-on classes where you can learn about the annual events, techniques, and culture of the time, you can also try on Juni-hitoe and Naogi. You can also try out ancient games such as board sugoroku and shellfish.

A prefectural museum located in a corner of saikuu. In order to introduce the history of saikuu, we use materials, models, and videos to explain in an easy-to-understand manner the role of Saio, an unmarried princess who served IseJingu Grand Shrine, and the state of saikuu at the time. In addition to permanent exhibitions, special exhibitions are also held from time to time.
