What is Kanai Shrine?

Kananomiya Kanai Shrine will celebrate its 800th anniversary in 2021. It was built in 1221 as a shrine to pray for good harvests and daily safety in order to protect people from natural disasters and famine, and has remained a beloved spiritual place for local people to this day.

Nowadays, many people come to worship not only as a place of faith and prayer, but also as a place where annual events and events such as New Year's visit and festivals are held.

In particular, ``Monthly Goshuin'' and ``Seasonal Hanachozu'' have become a hot topic on social media, and it has become recognized as a tourist attraction that conveys Japanese culture.

Seasonal hospitality decorations on the shrine grounds

At Kanai Shrine, the grounds that greet visitors are decorated with seasonal decorations. As you walk along the approach to the shrine, you can pass through the items decorated as if to offer hospitality to those who visit.

The seasonal decorations show off a fresh beauty in the solemn scenery of the shrine, making you feel happy every time you visit.

A fleeting wind chime

From June 1, 2020 to mid-September (scheduled), "Kanai wind chimes" will be displayed. The cool sound of wind chimes and the sight of strips of paper with wishes written on them swaying in the breeze will give you a sense of the Japanese summer atmosphere.

During the period, wind chimes will be displayed every day, and you can also donate strips of paper. (Firstfruits fee 300 yen)

carp streamer decoration

Every year, carp streamer decorations are displayed on the shrine grounds from April to the end of May. Colorful and cute carp streamers swim in the wind, praying for the healthy growth of children.

Kanai windmills, which replace votive tablets, are also displayed on both sides, and visitors can enter the shrine by walking through the approach path, which allows a refreshing breeze to pass through.

Votive lanterns and bamboo lights

At night from New Year's Eve to the 3rd of the new year, votive lanterns and bamboo lights are lit.

A votive lantern with a personal calligraphy written on it will be placed on the approach to the main shrine, a lantern with a fox pattern will be placed on the approach to the Nagao-do Inari torii gate, and an andon with the pattern of a past goshuin stamp will also be installed.

The gentle light of the andon and the bamboo light illuminating your feet create a fantastic scenery.

Kanai Shrine stamp

At Kanai Shrine, you can receive goshuin stamps that match the seasons of each month.

The words ``Kanai Shrine'' written in gold letters on top of the colorful design are truly gorgeous. The goshuin stamps made by a woman, Ms. Gonegi, are very cute with designs related to seasonal flowers, fruits, and seasonal events!

Kanai Shrine also offers original pastel-colored goshuin books. Additionally, there is a photo booth set up at the shrine office so that you can take photos of your Goshuincho, so you can take a photo of the Goshuin you received at a special location.

Monthly limited goshuin stamp

Goshuin stamps are limited to each month and can only be received in that month. Many people come to worship looking forward to seeing the designs of the goshuin stamps that change every month.

The goshuin stamp for August 2020 has a motif of "shaved ice" that seems to blow away the summer heat, and a seasonal flower "sunflower". The cute design will make you want to remember your summer days.

In May 2020, ``peony'' flowers and ``Botan's Festival Kintaro'' goshuin stamps were distributed.

Special stamp

Kanai Shrine is distributing stamps with designs of ``wind chimes and windmills'' and ``seashells'' as special stamps for August. The text ``Summer Pilgrimage'' is added, and it is written as proof of a visit to the shrine in the summer, hoping that the second half of this year will be healthy.

Kanai Shrine amulet

Kananomiya Kanai Shrine's unique amulet is Kanae Mamori.
There are three types of Kanamori: the hexagonal Kanamori, the Daifuku Kanamori which is over 20cm in size, and the most popular Kanamori is the heart-shaped Kanamori.

The heart-shaped amulets come in three colors: white, pink, and light onion, and are charm-shaped amulets that are full of blessings and cuteness that you'll want to keep on your body.

In addition, you can receive charms that suit your wishes, such as protection against academic studies, safe childbirth, traffic safety, good luck and warding off evil spirits, etc.

Kanai Shrine Hanachozu

Kanai Shrine is known as one of the shrines in Mie Prefecture that started Hanachozu early on.
Originally, in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection, it was not possible to use a ladle to cleanse your hands and mouth, so it was started as a way to purify your soul by looking at the flowers in the chozubachi.

Kanai Shrine's Hanachozu is so popular that if you search for "#Kanai Shrine" on Instagram, many photos of Hanachozu will come up.
The flowers in Hanachozu are cared for every day and replaced regularly, so the flower types and designs change from time to time.

*The photo shown is Hanachozu taken in the past.

spring Hanachozu

Kanai Shrine's Hanachozu is made by combining seasonal flowers, tin goldfish, marbles, and other items.
Hanachozu in the photo has peonies donated by the Peony Garden in InabeCity Agricultural Park in April. The gorgeous ``Peony Chozui'' is a spring-only Hanachozu.

summer Hanachozu

At the beginning of summer, hydrangea flowers are floated Hanachozu. The ``hydrangea Hanachozu'' floats on the water surface like a patchwork of pale pinks, purples, blues, and deep purples, giving it a fresh and refreshing impression.

Autumn Hanachozu

In the fall, there are Hanachozu designed with cute arrangements of small flowers, mainly spray chrysanthemums. The tin goldfish placed in the center looks like it's swimming in a flower pond!

winter Hanachozu

Even during the winter months, Hanachozu are prepared to welcome visitors. The person who came to pray at Hanachozu in the photo made a mini snowman from the snow on the grounds and placed it at the edge of Hanachozu. It's such a heartwarming episode.

A kitchen car at a shrine where people gather! ?

At Kanai Shrine, ``food stalls'' are held regularly using food trucks. The coffee, bread, and grilled sea bream are popular not only with locals but also with visitors!

Kitchen car at the shrine! ? You may think so, but I want people to visit the shrine as a place where people can gather in a friendly manner...that's how I feel.

Please check the official website of Kanai Shrine for announcements regarding the planned opening of the kitchen car.
