I went to Iga's specialty tofu dengaku ``Wakaya'' and Katayaki shop ``Kamata Seika''.

We visited Wakaya, a store in Iga-Ueno famous for its tofu dengaku, and Kamada Seika, a store in Katayaki, famous for its hard and famous souvenirs from IgaCity. At Wakaya, we enjoyed tofu dengaku, which is made with the same ingredients as in the past and preserves traditional cooking methods. At Kamada Seika, we learned the surprising fact that Katayaki, which we thought was hard, is soft when freshly made. Here are two stores that you should not miss when walking around Iga-Ueno!

Tofu dengaku has been eaten as a traditional dish in IgaCity for a long time. In IgaCity, I went to Dengakuza Wakaya, a restaurant near Iga Ueno Castle and NinjaMUSEUMofIgaryu.

The exterior of the store has a calm appearance. The inside of the restaurant has an atrium, so you can enjoy your meal in a relaxed atmosphere. The store boasts a history of over 200 years since its establishment.

Fun fact: Because the Iga region is surrounded by mountains, seafood was difficult to come by in the past, so tofu was valued as a valuable protein source.

This is the famous dish, tofu dengaku. As soon as you enter the store, there is a grilling area where you can watch the tofu dengaku being baked. Tofu made from organically grown soybeans is skewered and slowly grilled over charcoal.

As the tofu cooks, it is coated with a mellow-tasting miso. This miso also has a mellow taste, and the aroma when grilled over charcoal is irresistible. By the way, the flavor of miso changes depending on the season, and when I visited, it was yuzu miso.

Transfer the cooked tofu to a bowl. The aroma of miso alone will make you hungry, but the brown appearance will also whet your appetite.

Tofu dengaku brought to you. By the way, you can also enjoy set menus and side menus such as tofu hamburgers and raw yuba sashimi.

This is set B (990 yen). Remove tofu dengaku from a skewer, place it on top of rice, and eat together! That's how you eat it. I like the aroma of skewers, so I used to eat them directly from the skewers.

It's a delicious tofu dengaku that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, so it's unique to Iga Ueno! This restaurant is recommended for those who want to enjoy a meal.

Next, I went to Kamata Seika, a Katayaki shop in the castle town of Ueno, Iga. First of all, `` Katayaki'' is called ninja and is said to have been a portable food for Iga ninja in the past. Because it has a long shelf life, it was valued as an excellent preserved food on the battlefield. It is still made with simple ingredients and has a simple, nostalgic taste. It's a food unique to Iga.

Kamata Seika manufactures and sells Katayaki at its storefront. The photo shows Katayaki being made in the shop. By pressing firmly, it will take on the shape of Katayaki.

I bought it at the store and tried it. If you are from Mie Prefecture, you probably know that Katayaki is ``hard'' as the name suggests. However, when I ate it freshly made at the store, I was surprised at how soft it was! You can enjoy the soft and Katayaki that is different from usual (it will become a familiar Katayaki as time passes).

It's nice to buy Katayaki as a souvenir, but if you're in Iga Ueno, you should also try some freshly made katayaki.
