The trajectory of artists who pursued cutting-edge art in a turbulent era

One hundred years ago, in 1924, French poet André Breton published "The Surrealist Manifesto," which marked the beginning of Surrealism, the greatest artistic movement of the 20th century that has had a wide-ranging impact on modern culture. This movement, which explored the human unconscious and incredible beauty and aimed for freedom and liberation of the mind, eventually spread to many countries.
In Japan, artists such as Koga Harue and Fukuzawa Ichiro introduced Surrealism in the late 1920s, and Surrealist painting became popular in the 1930s. Artists such as Migishi Kotaro, Kitawaki Noboru, Aimitsu, and Okamoto Taro produced noteworthy works, and art students formed avant-garde groups and became a new force in the art world. However, Japanese militarism soon suppressed this movement, and many artists lost their lives in the war, and many works were scattered or burned.
This exhibition will present the first large-scale presentation of Japanese surrealist expression in approximately 30 years from the prewar Showa period, featuring approximately 200 pieces of artwork and documents, including surrealism, drawings, and photographs by around 90 artists.
