Enjoy a variety of glittering pearl jewelry

How have people created the sparkle and mystery of pearls that have fascinated us from ancient times to the present day? We will introduce the charm of pearls from various angles through excavated items, items presented to the imperial family, and jewelry.

<Prologue What is a pearl>
When we hear the word pearl, we imagine white, round beads, but pearls come in a variety of shapes and colors. We will introduce pearls, which are a wide variety of natural shapes created by shellfish.
<Chapter 1 Japan's natural pearls - Mie pearls>
Long before pearl farming began, natural pearls were prized as special objects due to their rarity and brilliance. Pearls from Ise-Shima have been used as gifts since ancient times, and in the Edo period they were increasingly used as medicines. Introducing what pearls were like before they were used in jewelry.
<Chapter 2 Natural Pearls of the World>
Natural pearls are harvested all over the world, and the Persian Gulf in particular is known as a historical major source of natural pearls. This chapter introduces the beauty of each type of pearl.
<Chapter 3: Spread of cultured pearls>
When cultured pearls began to be produced in the Meiji period, they also began to be used in jewelry. This chapter introduces crafts and jewelry made using cultured pearls.
<Epilogue: The sea that nurtures pearls, the people who nurture pearls>
Cultured pearls are gemstones created by the sea, shellfish, and human hands. We will introduce you to the sea of Mie that grows pearls, the pearls that are produced from shellfish in the sea, and the people who create an environment where shellfish can grow healthily.
