On the south side of the town of Mukumoto, there is a large Japanese oak tree that is said to be over 1,500 years old and stands in the middle of the slope of a plateau overlooking the Anogawa River from a hill above the town.
Tree height approximately 25m. It is said that the circumference of the trunk was once more than 12 meters, but the northern two-thirds of the trunk was damaged in a typhoon in 1898, and is still standing today.
This tree is one of the largest in Japan, and it is said that the name of the town of Mukumoto comes from this tree.
In 1994, the tree's vigor seemed to be weakening, so we are working to restore its vigor.
It was designated as a national natural monument on January 22, 1934 (S9).
