The Oshimenawa of Meotoiwa(rocksofthemarriedcouple) is replaced three times a year.
Meotoiwa(rocksofthemarriedcouple) serves as a torii gate to worship the Okitama Shinseki (a sacred stone located about 700 meters offshore from Meotoiwa(rocksofthemarriedcouple)) Futamiokitama-JinjaShirine which is connected to Sarutahiko Okami, the deity enshrined at Futami Okitama Shrine, and the God of the Sun.
Each large Shimenawa rope weighs 40 kg, is 10 cm thick, and is 35 m long, making a total of 5 ropes.
While a lively Mokuori song plays, the large shimenawa rope that has been purified is strung to Meotoiwa(rocksofthemarriedcouple) by the parishioners.
Worshipers can also participate by hand-feeding from the approach.
*This year, in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection, hand delivery and mochi throwing will be canceled.
(The schedule for the December Oshimenawa Shrine ritual is decided from mid-December on Saturdays and Sundays, taking into consideration the tides, and changes every year.)
