Shawa Gion Festival

Date: Saturday, July 13, 2024 to Sunday, July 14, 2024

It is said that the Gion Festival in izawacho was started in the late 1600s to quell an epidemic, but this is not certain.
Yoimiya/In the afternoon, the hut stand and mikoshi leave the shrine, pass through the town, and head to the inn. At night, large food stalls are added as well, inviting you into a fantastical world that has continued since the Genroku period.
Today / The festival reaches its climax when Kotadai and Mikoshi are paraded through the town all day long, the festival lanterns hanging from the eaves are lit, and Takabari lanterns are hung over the Mikoshi. The mikoshi is placed at the shrine and the Gion Festival ends quietly.
It was designated as an intangible folk cultural property by the prefecture on October 17, 2005 (H17).
