It is said to have been founded in the fourth year of the Kennin era (1204). It was burnt down during Oda Nobunaga's invasion, but was later rebuilt by Nobuyuki, who is said to be the founder of Kuwana pottery. There is a seated statue of Amida Nyorai made of tiled tiles, which is currently enshrined in the Amida Hall. A Shingon sect temple affectionately known as "Dobutsu-san." There is Akihabado in Okunoin, and a fire walking event is held every April 17th.
