Sengyo-no-gi
At IseJingu, there is a series of events called ``Shikinen ShikinenSengu,'' in which the shrine buildings and sacred treasures are rebuilt every 20 years in order to be transferred to the gods.
Among these, the most important event is a festival called ``Sengo-no-gi''. The Sengo-no-Gi ceremony is solemnly held on the night of the day designated by His Majesty the Emperor.
At 8:00 p.m., all the lights are turned off, and while musicians sing Kagura songs in the pure darkness lit only by torches and lanterns, a pure white silk fence is guarded by imperial envoys (messengers of the emperor), priests, and many other Shinto priests. A procession covered with lanterns (inside, the chief priest offers the ``go'') solemnly heads towards the Shingu.
It is the most majestic sight in the 1,300 years since ShikinenSengu began, and you can feel the weight of history.
The previous 62nd ShikinenSengu was held in 2013. The next 63rd ShikinenSengu is scheduled to take place in 2033.
