Prefecturally designated folk cultural property, lion dance ritual

It is a festival that has been passed down since the Muromachi period, and it is said that the origin of the festival is that there was once a smallpox epidemic and people prayed for the end of the plague.

When the dance begins, performed by tengu wearing black and red masks, pine cones are thrown by the onlookers, and the angry tengu lightly swat children and onlookers with fans and chase them.
This is a Shinto ritual in which the tengu is slain along with a lion.

It is said to be a unique and interesting folk art, as it is performed in temples and involves lions and the Mahaprajna Sutra, and was designated as an intangible folk cultural asset by the prefecture on December 9, 1965 (Showa 40).

You can view and edit the sightseeing route (My Plan on My Page) that will take you around the selected spots.
