What is Fumonji?

Fumonji is a Shingon sect temple located in the forest geinocho TsuCity, and is said to have been founded in the first year of Daido (806).

This temple has many temple treasures, including a group of Buddhist statues such as Dainichi Nyorai and Fudo Myoo, as well as the principal image of the Eleven-faced Kannon.

An opening day(March 31st in 2024) is set to coincide with the spring cherry blossom festival, andthese temple treasurescan be viewed on that day.

In addition, Fumonji Temple has many cherry blossom trees, and when the temple is in full bloom, the locals set up banners and lanterns for the cherry blossom festival, and when the temple is in full bloom, the precincts are decorated with cherry blossoms.

Lots of cherry blossoms in the precincts

Fumonji Temple has many cherry blossoms blooming within its grounds, and when they are in full bloom, the cherry blossoms extend outside the temple walls.

Many cherry blossoms are planted in the courtyard in front of the central gate, and when the flowers fall, a pink carpet spreads out.

Weeping cherry blossoms and large cherry blossom trees decorate the grounds around the main hall, and the venerable cherry tree, known as the ``Cherry Blossom of Potomac,'' is especially noteworthy. This cherry treeis the same sapling that was donated to Washington DC in 1912 by YukioOzaki then Tokyo's mayor, and is the largest cherry tree at Fumonji.

The cherry blossoms at night are spectacular!

At night, the cherry blossoms transform into a fantastic sight.

The pink to red lights from the lanterns illuminate the cherry blossoms, creating a vivid and bewitching atmosphere. This is my favorite spot because it seems to have a different face during the day and at night. This temple is usually quiet, so it is recommended for those who want to take their time and enjoy the view.

I especially recommend visitingduring the magic hour after sunset, when the contrast between the still blue sky and the cherry blossoms illuminated by the red light is particularly vivid and makes for great photographs.
