Maemura Bato Kannon statue

Proceeding from Maemura to the east of Wakayamabetsu Kaido, there is a small shrine next to the mountain on the left, and a statue of Bato Kannon is enshrined inside it.
Bato Kannon is a Kannon that has a horse's head on its head and has the aspect of anger. It is also known as Bato Myoo, and was widely worshiped especially during the Edo period as a god that protects horses.
This area of the road is a little wider, but until the middle of the Meiji era, there was a depot for horses and palanquins used to transport travelers, and horses and palanquins were waiting for customers. It must have been very busy.
