Enoura Tunnel (formerly nagashima Tunnel) Enoura Tunnel (Kyunaga Shimizuido)
These are the three brick tunnels located on the north side of the six tunnels that were constructed as part of the Kumano Kaido (currently National Route 42) renovation project that was carried out for 20 years starting in 1899. .
The northernmost tunnel is Enoura Tunnel (formerly nagashima Tunnel), followed by Furusato Pedestrian Tunnel (formerly kaino Tunnel) and Michise Pedestrian Tunnel (formerly Michise Tunnel) to the south.
It was designed by Totaro Iwai, a prefectural engineer, and directed by Hisashi Amano, a prefectural engineer.
All three have almost the same design, with a semicircular shaped mine entrance with a shield-shaped loomed stone at the top, and brick gates on both ends with capstones on top.
The interior is a mixture of brick-built parts and unexcavated parts.
The Furusato-Michise pedestrian tunnel is equipped with a brick niche (hanger) with a sawtooth decoration to store the gas lamp lighting equipment originally envisioned.
Today, it is still used as a town road and pedestrian tunnel.
