A new sightseeing spot in Matsusaka town!

This lion statue came to Matsusaka in 2016.
TakatoshiMitsui, the founder of the Mitsui family, was born in Matsusaka and was a great merchant whose name was known throughout the country. During the Edo period, Takatoshi Mitsui opened a kimono store called Echigoya in Nihonbashi, which later became Isetan Mitsukoshi Co., Ltd. It has become a global company called Holdings. As a result of this connection, a lion statue, the symbol of Mitsukoshi Department Store, was donated.

It is modeled after the lion statue under Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square in London, and legend has it that if you ride on its back, your wishes will come true. This area where the lion statue is located was once part of the Mitsui family's mansion, and is the gateway to Matsusaka, a town of wealthy merchants that is steeped in history and culture. In the past, it was a hub of exchange where people, goods, and information from all over the country gathered, and this geographical advantage produced many Matsusaka merchants who had stores in Edo, greatly contributing to its development.

Imagine the prosperity of Matsusaka during the Edo period as you walk through the quaint town where the mansions and collections of wealthy merchants remain as they were in the past. Then, take a break at the "Goshan Pocket Park" where the lion statue is waiting for you.
