Kumano Kodo Omotenashi House 熊野古道おもてなし館

Visit a beautifully restored 130-year old house and learn how to make traditional Kumano-style Sanma zushi and Mehari zushi with friendly locals. After the lesson, you can relax and enjoy eating your delicious sushi creations.

The seaside city of Kumano on the edge of Nigishima Bay is home to spectacular coastal views and a wide variety of fresh seafood dishes for visitors to enjoy. For anyone who would like to have a hands-on Japanese food experience, they can go to the historic Kumano Kodo Omotenashi House and learn to make Kumano-style sushi.

Friendly local ladies will share their expert knowledge of traditional Kumano cuisine and teach you how to make Sanma zushi with Pacific saury and Mehari zushi with pickled mustard leaves. The experience takes just under an hour and participants get to eat the dishes they make as a reward when they are finished.

The location of this fun and unique culinary experience is a beautifully renovated 130-year old former residence that is also a tourist hub. You will learn to make the sushi dishes in the comfort of a gorgeous traditional Japanese-style room with tatami mats and warm dark wood features.
