Anyoji is a large temple belonging to the Tofukuji sect of the Rinzai sect, and was built in 1297 by Chikotsudaie, the ninth generation of Tofukuji and a native of Ise.
At its peak, it was said to be a large temple with a moat surrounding its 100-square-meter precincts, and many halls and pagodas lined within it, making it a formal temple comparable to Kyoto's Gozan. .
