Nakiri Shrine Nakiri Jinja
A shrine known for the Waraji Festival.
In the past, whaling was also carried out at Nakiri. One day, when they were dissecting a whale they had caught, a large egg-shaped stone came out, surprising the fishermen. The fishermen, fearing the presence of a god, enshrined the stone (whale stone) at Nakiri Shrine.
Nakiri Shrine is also known for holding the ``Ashiya Gongen Autumn Festival,'' which is famous for the story of Dandarabotchi. The townspeople call the Autumn Festival of Ashiya Gongen the ``Waraji Festival,'' and they make large straw sandals and float them into the sea to pray for a bountiful catch and safety for the village.
