Ukehi Shrine Trees [Prefecturally Designated Natural Monument] Keijin Jajuso
Ukehi Shrine is a shrine that has been deeply worshiped by people as the guardian deity of Hamashima since ancient times, and the trees around Ukehi Shrine are considered to be the shrine's guardian forest.
It is a temperate evergreen broad-leaved forest characteristic of coastal areas, mainly consisting of Ogatamanoki, Tabunoki, Yabunikei, Camphor tree, Hortonoki, Himeyuzuriha, and Sudajii.
What is noteworthy is the presence of large trees exceeding 40 cm in diameter, which are evergreen trees of the Ilexaceae family found in Okinawa, Kyushu, and Shikoku, and whose northern limit is the Jingu Forest.
Many large trees fell down during the Ise Bay Typhoon that struck in 1965, but the area still remains in a lush state.
There are rare species that are academically valuable in this grove, and this is the result of the parishioners of the shrine who have since their ancestors deeply revered the shrine, regarded the sacred area as sacred, and protected it without cutting down the trees. .
It was designated as a prefectural natural monument on April 7, 1938 (S13).
