Nagase no Samaki Saya
Nagase no Samaki Saya

There are three Hidarimakigaya trees halfway up the slope right next to Kunitsu Shrine.
Hidarimaki Gaya is a variety of Kaya. The vertical stripes on the seed coat tend to twist to the right or left, and the fruit is larger than the regular Kaya fruit.
The tree is about 5 to 8 meters tall, has good vigor, and produces many fruits every year.
The fruit itself was also edible, and it is said that in Iga and Kiso, a confectionery called ``Kaya Arare'' was made by sprinkling it with sugar.
The seeds are often used in Chinese medicine as Hijitsu, and the Kaya tree itself is also famous as a high-quality material and is used for things such as shogi boards.
It was designated as a prefectural natural monument on April 2, 1936 (S11).
