It is a pilgrimage road that connects Kyoto and the sacred sites of the Kii Mountains, and leads to the Kumano Sanzan (Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, Kumano Nachi Taisha). This is the route I took when I went on a Kumano journey from the capital during the Heian period. It is registered as a world heritage site.

It is located on the Kii Peninsula and straddles Mie, Wakayama, Nara, and Osaka prefectures.
In addition to Iseji, there are five other roads: Kiiji, Kohechi, Nakahechi, and Ohechi.

Iseji is easily accessible from Nagoya, and you can get there in just 2 hours and 20 minutes by express bus or shuttle bus.

The route runs south through the eastern part of the Kii Peninsula, and you can enjoy a variety of scenery, including not only the stone pavements and bamboo groves typical of the Kumano Kodo, but also a course with a panoramic view of the Kumano Sea from a mountain pass, a course with a view of Japan's best rice terraces, and a pilgrimage route along the Kumano River. It is characterized by

In addition, there is a saying, "Seven times to Ise, three times to Kumano," and Iseji is also recommended for those who want to travel by combining "IseJingu + Kumano Kodo." The distance between IseCity Station and KumanoCity Station is approximately 2 hours, making it an attractive location.

We recommend that you consult the Kumano Kodo Center.

Magose-togePass course is popular because it allows you to easily enjoy a variety of scenery, including the beauty of the cobblestone pavement and the view from the top.
TsuZurato-togePass course can also be walked in about 3 and a half hours and offers a variety of views. The proximity to Nagoya is also a key point.
It is also recommended to combine the Matsumoto Pass course with the historic Hananoiwaya-jinjaShrine, which dates back to ancient times.

Iseji has a mild climate with almost no snowfall or accumulation, so you can walk there even in winter.
The best seasons are spring when the flowers bloom and autumn when the leaves turn red.
It is a rainy region, and the summer temperatures are high and there are many hot and humid days, so be sure to bring plenty of water.

The altitude is around 600m at the highest point, so heavy equipment is not required.
Trekking shoes and a knapsack for day trips are sufficient.
