Enjoy the sea, mountains, and gourmet food! Lots of walking experiences in osatsu-cho, TobaCity!!

掲載日:2021.03.17

osatsu cho TobaCity, ``the town with the most ama divers in Japan,'' is a popular tourist destination for its rich fishing village culture and beautiful scenery overlooking the ocean. Recently, we have been proposing Nordic walking around town, which can improve your health.
Therefore, we will introduce hiking and walking courses full of nature where you can enjoy the mountains and the sea at your own pace, as well as recommended spots that you should definitely visit.

The first course we recommend is a mountain hiking course that leads to Mt. Aomine Shofukuji Temple.
Aomine Shofukuji Temple is an ancient temple located on Mt. Aomine at an altitude of 336 meters, and is said to have been built by Gyoki during the Tenpo era (729-748).
Its principal image is the Eleven-faced Kannon Bodhisattva from osatsu Town legend of ``Kannon who came riding on a whale,'' and it is worshiped by fishermen and divers from all over the Shima region who wish for safety at sea.

This time, the challengers for Nordic walking are 2018 Tsu Queen Kishin Okuno (right) and 2019 Tsu Queen Aoi Yokoyama (left).
TobaCity, osatsu City is a place I've always wanted to visit, so I started with enthusiasm! You will be guided by an old stone monument that says ``Right Aomine Michi.''

"Nordic walking", which is currently being proposed in osatsu Town, is a full-body exercise that uses poles like ski poles to exercise not only the lower body but also the arms and upper body at the same time.
It is a full-body exercise that is attracting attention because it uses 90% of the muscles in the whole body, burning 40% more calories than regular walking.

Passing through villages lined with old stone walls and Koshin-do temples, we continued along country roads with streams running through them until we arrived at the trailhead.

The relatively easy-to-walk mountain trail, which has been designated by the Kinki Nature Trail as ``the path to visit Mt. Aomine, the god of boats'', is a sight to behold with rare giant rocks and green tunnels.
I enjoyed hiking about 4km one way, which left me feeling refreshed and sweaty.

At the entrance of Mt. Aomine Shofukuji Temple stands daimon that is said to have been completed in 1830.
The highlight is the elaborate openwork carvings of phoenixes and dragons. The fact that the rocky lobster is hidden inside the sculpture is unique to the guardian deity of the sea in Ise-Shima.

After praying for safety on this journey at the main hall, let's descend the mountain. We recommend returning home on a paved road.

The next thing we'll introduce is an exhilarating walking course along the coast.
Chidorigahama Beach is a beautiful sandy beach, so be sure to walk along the water's edge. Surrounded by the scent of the ocean and the sound of rippling waves, it is truly a relaxing moment.

Walking along the embankment leads to a cape called Kujirazaki.
Legend has it that this cape is where Kannon from Shofukuji Temple on Mt. Aomine appeared riding a whale. There is a promenade, and you can see ``Tateishi-san'' and ``Berai-san (Benzaiten)'', which are worshiped by fishermen, and a tunnel of ubamegashi, which is used as the material for Binchotan charcoal.

On the south side of Kujirazaki is Osatsu-kamado Ozego-san, an ama AmaHut(Amagoya)experience facility.
Let's have a seafood lunch (3,500 yen per person) where you can enjoy chatting with active ama divers.

On this day, we were greeted by active ama divers Tamie Ozaki (left) and Chizuko Nakamura (right), who were both born and raised in osatsu Town.

For the lunch course, you can enjoy locally produced turban shells, giant clams, and scallops grilled over charcoal, as well as simple dishes such as sea urchin rice, dried fish, and simmered arame.

"The oldest diver in osatsu is 86 years old, so we're still mid-level."
While laughing, we had a lively chat with the ama divers who were grilling shellfish over charcoal.
The Ama divers' stories are full of interesting stories, such as seaweed fishing in spring, cutting hijiki, and diving into the sea to catch turban shells and abalone. While we were enjoying the conversation, the shellfish was grilled!

Freshly grilled shellfish are steaming hot and full of the scent of the ocean. Once you put it in your mouth, you will be filled with the delicious taste of the sea.
The nourishment of the sea soaks into my tired body from walking...

After enjoying the fun talk and delicious food, we resumed walking and headed for the day's goal, Shinmei Shrine.

Shinmei-JinjaShrine is the guardian deity of osatsu Town, and enshrines Amaterasu Omikami as the host deity. Ishigami-san who is famous for ``always granting one woman's wish,'' is also enshrined within the shrine grounds. I would like to express my gratitude for the safety of Walking and pay my respects.

On the night of the full moon, the precincts are lit up and a night visit (until 8:30 p.m.) is held, called `` osatsu Kami Akari ~ Ishigami-san Night Visit''. Enjoy the fantastic atmosphere that is a little different from the daytime.

If you still haven't had enough of walking, why not extend your visit to the spectacular view spot "Harusame Observation Deck (Sugazakienchi)"?
From Harusame Observation Deck, you can see the Pacific Ocean on the left and Matoya Bay on the right, overlooking the magnificent ocean, and it is also known as a spot for beautiful sunsets.

In 1901, the destroyer Harusame ran aground off this coast, and many local people participated in the rescue. Today, a memorial monument has been erected to commemorate the dead and honor the rescuers.
It is also said that a couple who rings the Tokotowa Bell at Harusame Observation Deck will have eternal love.
