What should we do for free research during summer vacation? For families who are worried that it would be better to have something that parents and children can try, rather than just "seeing" it. How about the "Ise-Shima Fishing Village Activity" where you can experience nature in the fishing village of Toba? Let's think about the sea with local fishermen!

Summer vacation independent research

This time, photographer Masashi Asada and his son Asahi from Mie Prefecture will be participating! (Click here for Asada's profile)

1. “Ise-Shima Fishing Village Activity” is perfect for independent research to think about the “sea”!

During your summer vacation free research, let's think about the sea with the fishermen!

``Ise-Shima Fishing Village Activities,'' run by local fishermen in TobaCity Town, Toba City, is full of fun and educational experiences. In addition to enjoying fishing and cruising on a fishing boat, you can also learn about the environment of the ocean by experiencing farming clams and other clams.

Thinking about the “sea”
~Ecotourism initiatives in Uramura Town~

Uramura Town, located within Ise-Shima National Park, is a town rich in nature facing the Rias Coast.

Uramura Town, which is blessed with seafood and has a thriving fishing and diver industry, is carrying out various ecotourism initiatives in the hope that ``as many people as possible can learn about the town's rich nature and the charm of the region.''

What is ecotourism?

This is an initiative to not only experience and enjoy the local natural environment and history and culture, but also to learn about its charms and connect it to environmental conservation.

It is believed that by working together as a region to communicate its appeal, it will lead to the inheritance of history and culture, the creation of opportunities to reaffirm the value of the region, and the revitalization of the local community.

"Ise-Shima Fishing Village Activities" includes elements of ecotourism, allowing everyone from small children to adults to have fun learning through hands-on experiences about themes that need to be considered in this day and age, such as marine environmental conservation and SDGs. .

Clam farming experience tour

On the clam farming experience tour, you can learn about ocean environmental issues and the unique clam farming method researched and developed in Uramura Town!

Decreased clam harvest is a problem nationwide

Until about 20 years ago, it was said that you could catch crunchy clams by clam-picking on the beach in Uramura Town, but now you can't catch any clams at all, no matter how much you dig on the beach. This problem seems to be occurring nationwide.

The main cause is the acidification of beaches.
Due to the combined effects of global warming and the simultaneous release of water from dams, beaches have become acidic. Even if clams spawn in the sea, they die as soon as they reach the acidic sandy beaches.

Developed in Uramura Town! Clam farming using oyster shells

Therefore, "Care Shell" was developed in Uramura Town.
It is made from specially processed oyster shells that fishermen throw away as garbage, and it seems to continue to emit alkaline components that neutralize acidity.

The farming method is very simple, just place a net-like bag containing care shells on a sandy beach.

Of the baby clams born in the sea, only those that happen to reach the bag containing the care shells grow without being destroyed by the acidic sand. It is said that up to 480 clams were grown in one bag in six months to a year!
(For more information on Care Shell, please see the official website)

Won the Emperor's Cup! Aquaculture method attracting attention from all over the country

Our method of cultivating clams using care shells won the Emperor's Cup, the highest award in the fisheries category, at the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Festival ceremony sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries! Furthermore, this aquaculture method is attracting a lot of attention, with experts and people in the aquaculture industry coming from all over the country to inspect it.

On the clam farming experience tour, after hearing valuable stories from the fishermen, you will have the opportunity to take out the clams that have actually grown from the bag and harvest them.

Asada Asahi
Asahi-kun

Chop clams, crabs, and all kinds of shellfish from inside the bag! It was fun to look for treasure!

Each person can take home an armful of harvested clams.
It's also a good idea to take home some precious clams from Uramura as a souvenir and talk with your family about environmental issues surrounding the sea.

Masashi Asada
Mr. Asada

I'm glad you were able to explain things in an easy-to-understand way for children. Perfect for independent research!

beach clean

Have you ever heard that sea creatures accidentally swallow plastic and other trash?
In addition to the ocean plastic problem, trash thrown into the ocean causes a variety of other problems, such as seawater pollution and the collapse of the ocean ecosystem.

Let's think about preserving the ocean environment through beach cleaning.

*Beach cleaning is not included in the regular experience of "Ise-Shima Fishing Village Activities", but if you wish, it can be carried out together with the clam farming experience tour.

It seems that fishermen and local people are cleaning up the area frequently, but the trash continues to flow across the ocean and is never completely cleared.

By seeing and picking up trash that has fallen on the beach with their own eyes during the beach clean experience, we hope that the problem of marine trash will become more familiar to them.

fishing boat cruising

On "Fishing Boat Cruising," you can enjoy the rich natural scenery of Ise-Shima National Park and visit spots unique to fishing villages, such as oyster farming rafts.

As the fishermen skillfully maneuvered their fishing boats, they said things like, ``This is a deserted island!'' ``That's AmaHut(Amagoya)that's still in use today!'' ``If you look closely at the rock, there's a hijiki fish attached to it.'' It will tell you things.

Even small children can enjoy cruising without getting bored, passing under large bridges and passing other fishing boats!
