1. Mysterious sea of clouds seen at Tsuenomine

We woke up early and arrived at Tsuenomine around 6:30am. Then, a sea of clouds covered the mountains below! A sea of clouds is a rare and spectacular view that cannot be seen unless the weather and other conditions are right. It is said that a sea of clouds tends to appear at Tsuenomine on sunny early mornings from November to February. Furthermore, if the temperature difference between the night before and the morning of the day is large, the appearance rate will increase. Please check the weather before visiting Tsuenomine.

When the sun rises, the sea of clouds turns orange. It's a mysterious scenery.

Check out the video to see the sea of clouds at Tsuenomine. A pure white carpet of a sea of clouds covers Tsuenomine, and as time passes, the morning sun shines through and illuminates the sea of clouds, which is beautiful.

2. World Heritage Onigajo

Onigajo was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2004, and there is a legend that in the early Heian period, Sakanoue Tamuramaro, the Great Shogun, used Onigajo as his stronghold to conquer Tagamaru, a pirate who was feared as a demon. place. With sea breeze erosion caused by the rough waves of the Kumano Sea, wind and rain, and large tuff cliffs raised by several large earthquakes, it is truly a piece of "natural art" created by nature! You can enjoy the spectacular view of strangely shaped rocks that stretch for 1 kilometer along the coastline of the Kumanonada Sea.

Shiho: ``The entire ceiling of the cave is filled with holes with complex shapes that you wouldn't believe were formed by nature. It's a mysterious sight.''

While I was looking at the scenery, I saw a dragonfly on the quay of Onigajo!

Shiho-san took the photo right away. Looks like you took some great photos.

3. Take a sea excursion to Kumano's "Blue Cave" (Gama no Mouth) and "Tategasaki"

From Matsuzaki Port, about a 10-minute walk from Onigajo Castle, board a sightseeing boat. The sightseeing boat is a course that takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes to visit the scenic spots in the order of Onigajo→ Xu Fu Palace→ Blue Cave→Tategasaki → Sea Kongo.

Shiho: “I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of scenery we’ll see!”

You will be swayed by a sightseeing boat and will continue to move forward on the sea.

Shiho-san: “The sea breeze feels so good!”

Blue Cave (Gama no Mouth)

We arrived at the Blue Cave (Gama no Mouth)! It has a distinctive shape that resembles a toad (frog) with its mouth wide open.

We will go into the cave by boat. Inside the Blue Cave (Gama no Mouth), the sun's rays reflect off the ocean floor, making the sea surface glow brightly, and the color changes slightly depending on the weather that day.

This time it was cobalt blue. It seems that on days when the amount of sunlight is different, it can look emerald green, so you'll want to visit many times to enjoy the different colors.

Tategasaki

We arrived at Tategasaki by sightseeing boat. The columnar joints, which were created when a large amount of magma was cooled and solidified during a large-scale volcanic activity about 14 million years ago, are a sight to behold! It is also said to be the place where Emperor Jinmu landed, and is also famous as a mythical place.

If you watch the video, you can see that Tategasaki is a sheer cliff that resembles a shield.

Shiho: ``The best part of traveling to Onigajo is being able to enjoy the many kachiji with strangely shaped and gigantic rocks, such as Tategasaki HigashiKishu!''

Akoshi Shrine

Along the promenade is Akoshi Shrine, which is said to be dedicated to Mikeirino no Mikoto, the older brother of Emperor Jimmu. The contrast between the beautiful blue sea and the white torii gate is beautiful.

Senjojiki

After walking along the promenade for about 40 minutes, we arrived in front of Tategasaki. At your feet are large rocks called ``Senjojiki.''

Tategasaki

Shiho stands at the tip of Senjojiki and photographs Tategasaki. The back view holding the camera facing Tategasaki is so cool!

Hatasu is an area where you can trace myths, legends, and numerous historical sites, such as Jofuku no Miya, which enshrines Jofuku, and Hatasu no Michi, which has the oldest remaining cobblestones from the Kamakura period on the Kumano Kodo Iseji Route. Here, we will also have a ``Mehari Mehari-sushi'' in Idocho KumanoCity City. Mehari-sushi is a traditional local dish from HigashiKishu region, consisting of a rice ball wrapped in lightly pickled mustard greens. Shiho is eating Mehari-sushi for the first time, and how does it taste? !

“The amount of salt in the mustard greens that wraps the rice is exquisite and delicious!” says Shiho. The real pleasure of traveling is eating food that is unique to this region!

6. Japan's oldest shrine "Hananoiwaya-jinjaShrine"

Next, we visited Hana-no-Iwaya Iwaya Shrine, which is said to be Japan's oldest shrine. Proceed along the approach lined with trees and votive flags.

In Hana-no-Iwaya that appears in the Nihon Shoki, there are statues of Izanami no Mikoto, the god of the birth of the nation and the birth of the gods, and his son, Kagutsuchinomikoto. ' is enshrined here. The object of worship is a splendid rock (Iwakura) with a height of about 45 meters, and it is said to be the grave where Izanami no Mikoto died from burns while giving birth to Kagutsuchinomikoto, and was buried there.

Shiho: ``When you pass through the approach path surrounded by trees, you'll see a divine object illuminated by light, and it's very mysterious. You'll be overwhelmed by the size of the sacred object.''

7. World Heritage Site Shishiiwa

Shishiiwa, a scenic spot located about a 10-minute walk from Hananoiwaya-jinjaShrine. Shishiiwa is designated as a World Heritage Site and a national scenic spot and natural monument. The appearance that resembles a lion roaring toward the Kumano Sea is said to have been created by the uplift of the ground and a decrease in sea erosion.

Shiho: ``I've seen photos that combine Shishiiwa with seasonal scenery. One shows the morning sun and the moon entering the mouth of Shishiiwa, and another shows the beautiful fireworks and Shishiiwa of the Kumano Fireworks Festival. Take photos together. Even at the same spot, there are many ways to enjoy it depending on the season and time of day."

I went to the bottom of Shishiiwa which is about 25 meters high. If you go right down to the bottom, you can see the size clearly. Amazing! Shishiiwa is said to be the top dog of Ouma Shrine, where Tayamaru is buried, and is the largest top dog in Japan.

8. Japan's longest gravel beach "ShichiriMihamaBeach"

At the end of the trip, Shiho walks along ShichiriMihamaBeach where Shishiiwa stands out. I found a spot where the seawater pooled on the sandy beach and reflected the sky beautifully!

ShichiriMihamaBeach is Japan's longest gravel coast (a coast made of sand created by the waves and currents of the Sand Sea), stretching approximately 22 kilometers in a gentle curve from KumanoCity to KihoTown. It is known as kachiji and has been selected as one of Japan's ``100 Best Beaches in Japan,'' ``Japan's 100 Best White Sands and Green Pines,'' and ``Japan's 100 Best Natures to Preserve in the 21st Century.''

Hana-no-Iwaya is mentioned as a ``stage for domestic production'' in the first part of the Age of Gods of Japan's first history book, Nihon Shoki, which was written in 720 (Nara period). This place has an important meaning as the ancient sacred place ``Kumano of Kumano'', which predates the Kumano Sanzan faith, and is truly a place that can be called the roots of the Japanese people. History books mention that the sacred treasures were moved from Hana-no-Iwaya to Hongu Taisha. Just as written in the Nihon Shoki, the annual festival is still held on February 2nd and October 2nd every year, and many people come to worship.

Onigajo is a large rock wall created by uplift from earthquakes, weathering, and wave erosion. In addition to being designated as a national scenic spot and natural monument, it is also registered as a World Heritage Site as part of the "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes of the Kii Mountain Range." There is a promenade for about 1km along the rock wall, and you can enjoy the numerous caves large and small, as well as the strangely shaped rocks. At the top of the mountain, there are castle ruins from the Sengoku period, and there is a hiking course that connects it to Kumano Kodo and Matsumoto Pass. You can see the entire Kumano Sea from the observation deck called Oni-no-Miharashi. There are many cherry blossom trees planted along the hiking trail to the top of the mountain, and in spring, four types of cherry blossoms bloom one after another, pleasing the eyes of tourists who visit for a long time.
