A good first stop for a visit is the Yokkaichi Port Building, where guests can head to Umi-Terasu 14 observation and exhibition deck to appreciate the views of the surrounding area. Day or night, the scenery is worth seeing but at night it truly shines, as the factories in the area light up the evening and guests can view the twinkling luminescence from the 14th floor of the 100-meter tall skyscraper. During clear weather, the scenery extends all the way from the Suzuka mountains to JR Central Towers, across the bay to Chubu Centrair International Airport and the Chita Peninsula, and all the way to the Japan Alps. The nearby metropolis of Nagoya is particularly stunning at night, as the panorama turns the urban landscape into a light show. Between admiring the views, visitors are also welcomed to learn about the day to day running of the famous port area, as well as the history of Yokkaichi on the many informative displays. On the 12th floor, guests can visit Cafe port12 for some tea or coffee. Nearby is Sydney Port Park, which commemorates the sister port relationship that Yokkaichi has with the Australian city.

Then, take in the spectacle from a different vantage point at sea level, on a 60- or 90-minute Yokkaichi Industrial Complex Night Cruise. Enjoy the sea breeze as well as the sparkling lights of industry from the comfort of a sleek, modern boat, with an observation deck on the roof that allows visitors to view the many sights on each side of Ise Bay, from the glowing refineries to the neon colors of the lively cities. Also possible is a private cruise for a more intimate experience. Some of the notable sights the cruise goes past are the Shiohama Industrial Complex, the old port, the Shiofuki Breakwater (designated as an important cultural property), the LNG Pipe Bridge and the Kasumigaura Ryokuchi Park. The night view from Isotsuzutumi Breakwater at the mouth of the Suzuka River offers yet another chance to gaze at the vivid illuminations reflected in the ocean waters. Well known as a great photography spot, even more impressive views of the Yokkaichi Industrial Complex can be found here. The industrial buildings are not only a vital part of powering Japan but have a striking visual appeal, stemming from their grand scale and futuristic appearance. Visitors often find themselves more entranced than they expect, a surprising glimpse to contrast with more traditional sights.

Finally, complete the evening with Japanese cuisine at Sushi Sakaba Minato restaurant. Japan’s world renowned raw fish cuisine, sushi and sashimi, are famous here. Guests can join in a sushi making workshop, which makes for a very special hands-on experience to complement the scenic tour. This restaurant also offers breaded and fried skewers, known as kushi-age, which goes very nicely with the wide selection of drinks, including regional sake. Yokkaichi has much to offer, from scenic views to amazing photography opportunities, so make sure to include it in any travel plans—and don't forget to bring a camera!
