Kyuka Park: Flowers in (Almost) Every Season

Kyuka Park: Flowers in (Almost) Every Season

Built on the site of the Kuwana Castle Ruins, Kyuka Park is one of the city’s best spots for botanical buffs. About 450 cherry trees of the varieties someiyoshino, shidare-zakura, yama-zakura and more decorate the area in soft white and pink blossoms through April. The trees are illuminated from sunset to 9:30 p.m., adding a warm and romantic atmosphere to the event. In late spring to early summer, visitors can enjoy azaleas and irises as well.

Hashiriizan Park: A Sea of Cherry Blossoms

Hashiriizan Park: A Sea of Cherry Blossoms

Another park with a fascinating history, Hashiriizan Park is built on the site of Yada Castle, a fortress built during Japan’s Warring States period (late 15th- end of the 16th century). Though it is smaller than Kyuka Park, it’s a favorite among Kuwana locals and no less charming. About 120 somei yoshino cherry trees form a canopy over the stairs and the paths through the park. As the petals flutter down, they create a carpet of pale pink blossoms on the ground. The small Okiku Inari Shrine’s row of red torii gates creates a picture-perfect view when enveloped by pale pink cherry blossoms above.

Nagashima Mizube no Yasuragi Park: A Historical Feel

Nagashima Mizube no Yasuragi Park: A Historical Feel

This beautiful park features a historic house from the 1800s that hints at Kuwana City’s illustrious samurai past. The building is a former residence of the Kuga family, who were powerful members of the Nagashima Clan. It was constructed in 1879 and now serves as a tourist facility for visitors to enjoy. In spring, the adjoining peony garden creates a colorful collage of peonies. There are benches dotted around the area, so visitors can sit down among the flowers and enjoy them as they rest their weary legs. The nearby Nagashima River promenade also offers an excellent opportunity for a relaxing springtime stroll.

Nagashima Farm allows visitors to pick the strawberries and eat as many as they like for a generous 40 minutes. Toppings of condensed milk and chocolate syrup are also available for those who want to experiment with a multitude of flavors.

With swings sets, slides and monkey bars, this is by far one of the kid-friendliest parks on this list. Fujigaoka Design Park is a green oasis in the city, with rolling hills, wooded areas and an observation deck known locally as a night view spot. In spring, the rows of cherry blossom trees that line some of the paths create a dreamy tunnel to walk underneath. For families looking for a place to spend the whole day enjoying the warm spring weather, this park is highly recommended. Bring some snacks — or a whole picnic — to make the most of this wonderful outdoor space. For visitors coming later in spring, the wisteria trellis becomes a fragrant lilac shelter to rest under.
